Project Status
Environmental Fieldwork
June 20, 2008 Archaeology teams will be conducting more detailed follow-up fieldwork at several potential sites in Colonial Heights and Petersburg in July and August 2008. For more details on environmental fieldwork click here.
Design Work
June 20, 2008 Current railroad and highway design work is primarily concentrated in the Richmond to Petersburg corridor and in Raleigh. To see more detail on this work click here.

Other Corridor Activities
Richmond to Hampton Roads Passenger Rail Study ( R2HR )-Tier I EIS-Ongoing
-The R2HR Draft EIS (Tier I) is undergoing modifications resulting from FRA comments. Hearing times/locations will be posted as they are finalized.
Charlotte, NC to Macon, GA–Further Studies-Ongoing
-The Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina Departments of Transportation are continuing to evaluate the overall suitability and costs of developing high speed passenger train service between Charlotte, NC and Macon, GA.
GDOT is overseeing work by the Volpe Center to: 1) recommend rail top speeds and technologies that balance potential ridership and revenues with infrastructure and operating costs; 2) forecast ridership over at least a 25 yr. time horizon; 3) assess whether operating revenues might exceed operating costs and infrastructure maintenance costs; 4) compare this corridor’s performance with similar rail corridors in other regions; and 5) determine other quantifiable economic impacts of high speed rail corridor investments.
The environmental planning process may appear lengthy. However, it insures that every effort has been made to prevent negative impacts to the human and natural environment, while planning the SEHSR project in a cost-sensitive and safe manner that meets the needs of the traveling public.
